The first nonaselenium ring

During the 2009 year, the high-quality X-ray diffraction powder patterns for the new compound Rh2Se9Cl6 were obtained on a STOE STADI P diffractometer using "STOE Capillary Sample Holder" (Debye-Scherrer geometry) in a precision alignment and X-ray structural analysis (powder method) was performed. The ab initio solution and refinement of the crystal structure for Rh2Se9Cl6 in the anisotropic approximation for atomic displacement parameters revealed the existence of a “ring-crown” Se9 in the structure of this compound. Such nine-membered selenium ring is observed firstly in solid state substance, and is a fundamental phenomenon in chemistry.

Based on a general work, in cooperation with scientists of “Vernadsky Institute of general and inorganic chemistry of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences” and National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” the paper was published in the journal “Chemical Communications” . More detailed information is presented on a Web-site of "RSC Publishing":

The reaction of Se2Cl2 with RhCl3·4H2O at 100 °C gives dirhodium nonaselenium hexachloride Rh2Se9Cl6.
The structure exhibits the first Se9 ring observed to date.

To "Days of "Uniwersytet Wroclawski" in Ivan Franko National University of Lviv" - the scientific seminar of Faculty of Chemistry (Lviv, May 14, 2010) - presentation of report " Se9 Crown" and essay of relationship of chemistry with sociology, history and art.
