A Triumphant Victory of Lviv University Students at the International  Olympiad on Programming “KPI-OPEN 2018”

Immediately the two teams of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv performed brilliantly at the 13th Opened International Student Olympiad in Programming named after S.O. Lebedev and V.M. Glushkov “KPI-OPEN 2018”. Among the best Ukrainian and foreign student programming teams, the team “LNU AlgoPenguins” took the absolute first place. Students of the Lviv University, united in the team “LNU Unhard”, – in the second position, sharing it with colleagues from the Kiev National University of Taras Shevchenko.

Vitalii Herasymiv, Andriy Makar and Volodymyr Radiuk joined the winning team “LNU AlgoPenguins”. The young and ambitious LNU Unhard team united students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics Bohdan Pastushchak, Danil Mocherniuk and Maksym Shcherbu. The coach of both teams is Vitalii Herasymiv.

This year, the participants of the Olympiad successfully solved sixteen tasks – eight in the first and second round. According to the organizers, the Olympiad tasks are always very difficult, and this year they were especially difficult. The competition lasted for three days and ended on July 6, 2018, with defining and awarding the winners in the Hall of the Academic Council of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kiev Polytechnic Institute”.

KPI-OPEN is one of the world’s largest competitions in programming. Olympiad is conducted under the original rules, harmonized with international ones.

According to the organizers, in previous years this Olympiad has become one of the main events for students who are studying program skills at Ukrainian universities and in the countries of Eastern Europe. Not only students but also r many IT companies, which have great opportunity to find promising employees are interested in the students’ future career development. The popularity of KPI-OPEN is constantly growing – as evidenced by the expansion of geography and the number of participants in the Olympiad. For all previous years, participation in KPI-OPEN took 860 teams, 3,500 students from 165 higher education institutions in 15 countries of the world. This year, representatives of Estonia, China, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Romania, Hungary and, of course, Ukraine, came to take part.
