At Lviv university the Polish and Ukrainian scientists are discussing issues of physical and colloid chemistry, nanostructures and bioactive materials

Within the XV-th Ukrainian-Polish symposium “Theoretical and experimental studies of interfacial phenomena and their technological applications”, held September 12-15,  2016 at Lviv University. More than 100 leading Ukrainian and Polish scientists, some dozens of academicians, corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine as well as professors discuss topical issues related to the surface of chemistry, surface phenomena and their technological application. The second Conference on Nanostructures and bioactive materials «NANOBIOMAT» takes place within the symposium.

The representative group of scientists of Ukraine and Poland as early as the fifteenth devotes their scientific collection to issues concerning phenomena adsorption, activity of catalysts, methods of chromatographic analysis of materials and complex mixtures.

During the opening ceremony the event organizers and special guests addressed the participants of the symposium with the welcoming words.

Academician Mykola Kartel (Academician-secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine) in his opening remarks noted that the theme of the symposium is extremely important because it concerns such superficial phenomena as ion synthesis, electrochemistry and different aspects of physical chemistry.

Mykola Tymofijovych stressed the fruitfulness of cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish scientists in the field of chemical research, noting that symposium, in particular, “is a testament to how collaboration can successfully make new discoveries in physical and colloid chemistry”.

“What is more, a lot of young scientists participated in the symposium. Hence, it gives us hope for the future” noted Mykola Kartel.

On behalf of the administration of Lviv University vice-rector for scientific research, corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine, Roman Hladyshevsky addressed the participants of the symposium.

Roman Yevgenovych highlighted the tight historical connection of Lviv, Lviv University and Poland. The vice-rector spoke about the formation and development of the University since its foundation, when King John II Cazymyr signed diploma, which gave the Jesuit College in Lviv “dignity of Academy and the title of university” up to now. Professor Roman Hladyshevskyi also focused on institutional growth of the University and the high-level of scientific researches at Ivan Franko LNU.

“Interfacial phenomena always played an important role in Chemistry and Biology, to mention, for example, the field of catalysis, but interest in the phenomena occurring at the interface between substances has increased significantly with the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Here, the surface properties become more and more important compared with bulk of properties “, – the vice-rector noted.

According to Roman Hladyshevskyi, nanoscience in its varifications plays an important role in modern society. “Hence, our knowledge of phenomena at the interface should be intensified. So, it is reasonable to unite symposium on theoretical and experimental studies of interfacial phenomena with the conference of nanostructured biocompatible and bioactive materials “, – the scientist claims.

The Polish colleagues, especially Professor Jadwiga Skubiszewski- Zyemba and Yolanta Narkevych- Mikhalek had a welcoming speech.

Professor Henrik Sobchuk expressed his hope for strengthening Ukrainian-Polish scientific cooperation through the development of cooperation of the National Academies of both countries.

The Coordinator of «NANOBIOMAT» Liubov Mykhalovska also stressed the importance of joint research and the need for the exchange of experience for the proper development of science in general. “Only by working together, we will succeed,” – she assured.

After the grand opening of the symposium scientists continued to work on five thematic sections.  Scientists prepared over 200 reports, 40 of which were orally presented.

According to organizers, the symposium and conferences contributes to scientific development, joint research and publications published in international journals with high impact factor.

“So far there has never been such long-lasting traditional association of Polish and Ukrainian scientists in all disciplines in Ukraine”, – says academician Mykola Kartel.

In addition, within symposium University Rector, Professor Volodymyr Melnyk met with a delegation of Polish scientists and representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. During the conversation there was discussed the state of the science in Ukraine as well as necessity for cooperation between Ukrainian scientists and foreign colleagues to exchange experience and conduct joint research.
