Japan biologists learn practical skills in the laboratory of Ivan Franko Lviv National University

A group of Japanese biologists from Tohoku University from 7 to 16 June 2018 is on a visit to the research laboratory of genetics, breeding and genetic engineering of actinomycetes producing antibiotics (NDL-42) at the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

The group, which includes associate professor Takashi Matsui, and students of Tappei Hori and Haruki Yugeta, is headed by Professor Yoshikazu Tanaka. In Lviv University, Japanese researchers acquire practical skills in genetic and microbiological work with actinobacteria, mastering methods for the isolation of genomic DNA and tRNA from these organisms.

A visit of Japanese researchers was made possible thanks to a common Ukrainian-Japanese grant, funded by the Ukrainian State Fund for Fundamental Research of Ukraine (scientific leader of the grant – the head of the NDC of the Lviv University Bogdan Ostash). It should be noted that this is the third trip of Japanese scientists in NDL-42. A fourth visit is scheduled for 2019, which will launch a new level of cooperation between Ukrainian scholars with Japanese – with the involvement of international funding.
