At the invitation of the Gdańsk University of Technology (Gdańsk Polytechnic) and the University of Gdańsk, six leading scientists from the Faculties of Mathematics, Physics, Chemisty, Electronics and Computer Technologies, Applied Mathematics and Informatics participated in a seminar on scientific cooperation that took place in Gdańsk (Poland). The scientists from Lviv also had the opportunity to visit the research laboratories of both local higher educational establishments and represented the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv during the official conclusion of an agreement on cooperation between the leading universities of Ukraine and Poland.

On the first day of their visit, the scientists of Lviv University familiarized the participants of the seminar with the main areas of scientific research at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Moreover, they visited the laboratories of  Gdańsk Polytechnic. The reports on scientific research of Lviv University were presented by the Head of the Research and Development Department of the University, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yuriy Plevachuk, the Chairperson of the Department of Organic Chemistry, Professor Mykola Obushak, the Chairperson of the Department of Experimental Physics Anatoliy Voloshynovskyi, the Chairperson of the Department of Biophysics and Bioinformatics, Professor Andriy Babskyi, Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies Ivan Kunio and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Senior Research Fellow Vitaliy Horlach.

When the seminar was over, the representatives of the University of Lviv and Gdańsk University of Technology concluded the Agreement on cooperation between the higher educational establishments. The aim of the Agreement is to promote international cooperation in higher education, research and innovation.

According to the Agreement, the higher educational establishments will implement student exchange programs, create joint curricula and exchange programs for researchers for the purpose of researching, teaching and presentation of special courses in their specialization areas, create joint research programs, and hold conferences, seminars, symposia etc.

Radio Poland reports that the Rector of Gdańsk Polytechnic, Professor Jacek Namieśnik, expects from the conclusion of the Agreement positive results at all levels, from exchange programs for students and teachers to joint scientific and research projects.

The Rector of the University emphasized that the signing of the agreement was preceded by several mutual official visits. “Today we have reached the stage when we can continue the expansion of our cooperation – to move from the level of rectors to faculty staff. I am convinced that now we will start working closely together very quickly,” said the Rector of the Polish University.

Jacek Namieśnik also emphasized that Ukrainian scientists have great experience and potential in many fields of modern science and technology.

According to Lev Zakharchyshyn, Consul of Ukraine in Gdańsk, active cooperation between academic institutions will allow “to combine Polish and Ukrainian research and development potential and create value added energy.”

Together we can create a young team desirous of success that will be more effective in competition with schools, for example, in Germany and France, which no longer have the motivation we have,” pointed out the Consul.

On the second day of their stay in Gdańsk, the scientists of Lviv University visited the laboratories in the Faculties of Chemisty, Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk.

The Chairperson of the Department of Organic Chemistry of Lviv University, Professor Mykola Obushak, stated that the main fields of scientific work in the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Gdańsk are peptide chemistry and carbohydrate chemistry, physical and chemical research in organic and inorganic chemistry, chemistry of materials and environmental chemistry.

“The buildings for conducting research and classes were constructed several years ago. The laboratories have the latest equipment, which is a solid ground for high-level research. The scientists of our University will be able to use them while cooperating with their Polish colleagues under the Agreement between the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the University of Gdańsk,” said Mykola Obushak.

Chairperson of the Department of Experimental Physics Anatoliy Voloshynovskyi said that the organizational structure of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at the University of Gdańsk includes institutes, divisions and laboratories.

“Research interests of scientists from one of the units of the University – the Institute of Experimental Physics – involve atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state physics, bio- and biomedical physics, quantum interferometry, and acoustics. The equipment of the Laboratory for Characterization of Luminescent Materials and Nanomaterials demonstrates the ability to conduct research at the latest scientific level, which allows measuring the parameters of luminescent processes with the picosecond time resolution in the temperature range of 10 -500 K under hydrostatic pressure,” claimed Anatoliy Voloshynovskyi.

Visiting the Polish higher educational establishments made a great impression on the representatives of Lviv University and in the near future one should expect joint research and boost in academic cooperation in general.
