The Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Professor Volodymyr Melnyk met with the Executive Director of PEN International Carles Torner on April 19, 2017. The sides discussed prospects of participation of Lviv University in organizing the PEN International Congress to be held this year in September.
The Congress is an annual event, and for the first time it will be held in Ukraine. The theme of this year’s event is “Defending the truth in daily propaganda” and will help draw attention to Ukraine during the Russian aggression and focus attention on human rights, problems of internally displaced persons and Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia.
It is expected that the Congress will be attended by 200-250 writers from around the world who will bring the truth about Ukraine to their countries. Students of Lviv University will be able to directly communicate with many of them during the planned meetings.
ПЕН-клуб (International PEN) є найстарішою міжнародною неурядовою організацією, яка об’єднує професійних письменників, редакторів і перекладачів. Організація створена 1921 року з метою сприяння дружбі й інтелектуальній співпраці письменників всього світу, а також акцентує увагу на ролі літератури в розвитку взаєморозуміння і світової культури. Однією з найважливіших сфер діяльності клубу є боротьба за свободу слова і захист прав письменників, які зазнають утисків та переслідувань за свої погляди. ПЕН-клуб перебуває у формальних консультаційних зв’язках з ЮНЕСКО і має спеціальний консультативний статус в Економічній і Соціальній Раді ООН.
PEN International is the oldest international non-governmental organization that brings together professional writers, editors and translators. The organization was founded in 1921 to promote friendship and intellectual cooperation between writers around the world and focuses on the role of literature in the development and understanding of world culture. One of the major areas of its activity is fighting for freedom of speech and protection of writers who suffer oppression and persecution for their views. PEN International is in formal consultative relations with UNESCO and has special consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the UN.
