Information on the thesis

The scientific research is devoted to the geospatial features of pilgrimage
organization in Lviv region, the analysis of the denominational situation, the study and
grade assessment of the resources of pilgrimage (wonderworking icons, relics of saints and
the blessed of Christian faith, healing springs), the development of scientific and practical
recommendations on the development of pilgrimage, the introduction of new pilgrimage
and informative routes.
The analysis of scientific works on this problem has shown that in modern geography
there are works devoted to questions of geography of religion, religious tourism, problems
of religion organization on the national scale and in the context of certain regions of
Ukraine. At the same time, the study of works of geographers, religious and cultural
studies scholars in the light of current research trends give grounds to argue about the need
for a detailed socio-geographical study of the phenomenon of the pilgrimage.
The history of the pilgrimage development in Ukraine and the world is briefly
outlined, pilgrimage sites of Lviv region have been grouped according to the date of
appearance or the first mention. The emphasis is placed on the analysis of the
denominational situation in the region and its spatial characteristics. The analysis of the
administrative and territorial structure of denominations and its influence on the
pilgrimage has been made, the main organizers of the pilgrimage at various managerial
levels has been carried out. The main resources of the pilgrimage are investigated, their
grade evaluation has been carried out, the mapping of these resources has been performed.
The main streams of pilgrimages and places to which pilgrimages and dismissal
pilgrimages are regularly carried out are highlighted. On the basis of grade assessment, the
denominational composition of the population, pilgrimage resources on the territory of
Lviv region we have singled out nine pilgrimage districts. Classification of pilgrimage
sites in Lviv region has been carried out, pilgrim clusters, pilgrim centers, knots and
locations have been distinguished. The features of the location of sacred places and
resources in the Lviv region are elucidated. Mapping of the most famous pilgrimage sites
has been made, pilgrimage resources have been investigated by regions and cities of
regional significance.
The problems of the development of pilgrimage infrastructure and the pilgrimage in
Lviv region are analyzed. Based on a grade assessment of the sacred sites, where
miraculous icons and relics of saints and the blessed of the Christian creed are kept and
healing springs are located, pilgrimages with a developed and poorly developed
pilgrimage infrastructure are singled out. The necessity of creating new pilgrimage routes
with the purpose of popularizing pilgrimage is emphasized.
