In the thesis, the features of the formation of the Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology system are considered, its origins and ways of the development are determined, and the periodization is presented, with the influence of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors taken into account. As a significant component of the national language, the UETS has been developing in direct connection with the emergence of the electric power engineering branch as a science and the process of formation of its conceptual apparatus. In the process of study of the Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology several stages of its formation have been identified: Period I – natural accumulating the term material and laying the UETS foundations; Period II – strengthening the foundations of the Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology; Period ІІІ – the time of interference effects on the Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology; and Period IV – the development and revival of the UETS, and the intensification of terminological searches.

It is proved that the modern Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology is an integral system of hierarchically organized language units, and the feasibility of its highlighting as a meaningful component of the general literary language is demonstrated. The close connection of the electric power engineering branch with other scientific fields is manifested in the presence of general scientific, general technical, physical, thermal power, mathematical, chemical and other field terms in the UETS. Based on the thematic classification of the Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology, five different thematic categories of the UEST with regard to the volume and structure are distinguished, which are divided into thematic groups, subgroups, and nests.

The system of terms of the UETS is quite clear and logical at the notion level, and the language design is represented by various structural models. The Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology system covers the two structural types of terms: one-component and multicomponent ones. Among the one-component terms the three groups are identified, which are non-derivative terms, derivative terms, and composite terms. Multicomponent terms are quantitatively dominant in the UETS. Depending on the number of components, electric power engineering terminological compounds are divided into the three multimodel structural types, which are two-component, three-component and polycomponent ones. Among electric power engineering terms the two-component ones dominate, which along with one-word terms constitute the basis of the studied terminological system.

In the manuscript, the structure of the field of terms of the electric power engineering terminology is defined, its thematic classification is performed, the paradigmatic relations (the phenomena of synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, etc.) are analysed, and the structural and grammatical features of electric power engineering terms are considered. The main violations of the language norm at the lexical and word building levels in nominating notions of the electric power engineering branch are identified, and the proposals on the improvement of some Ukrainian electric power engineering terms in accordance with the modern Ukrainian language norms are justified and formulated.

Key words: term, terminology, Ukrainian electric power engineering terminology system, lexical and semantic processes, thematic classification, structural and grammatical features, language norm.
