Influence of the Vikings on the development of Irish society at the end of VIII–X centuries.

The dissertation is devoted to complex investigation of features and differences of
relationship and mutual influences of the Vikings and the Irish at the end of VIII–
X centuries. These relationships are considered in conjunction with other events that
preceded the Viking Age on the island that took place in Ireland and the Scandinavian
Peninsula, and in the British Isles and continental Europe.
Peculiarities of influence of the Vikings in three main directions of society life:
military and political, cultural and religious, social and economic are analyzed separately
based on the study of sources of Irish and Scandinavian origin. The place of Niall of the
Nine Hostages and St. Patrick in formation of the medieval state in Ireland is defined. The
process of formation of the Irish and Scandinavian state during VVIII centuries is
investigated. The role of the Vikings in the political life of the island is illuminated. The
place of dynastic marriages in Scandinavian political relations with local rulers is outlined.
The influence of Norman in the development of military affairs of Ireland is analyzed.The
peculiarities of mutual influence between the Normans and the local population in the
cultural sphere are outlined as well as the place of the Irish Church in the process is
defined. The process of formation and features of the Irish church are followed. The
connection between pagan and Christian traditions in the religious life of the island is
analyzed.
The basic stages Viking Age are characterized. The period from 795 until the
middle of the ninth century is characterized by systematic attacks of the Vikings on Ireland
and negative influence. Instead, after the founding of Scandinavian cities, they begin to
engage in the political, economic and cultural life of the island actively, what was leading
to their assimilation with the local population in the early eleventh century.
The interconnection of political events and economic life of the island is analyzed.
Social changes of Irish society at the end of VIIIX century are studied. The process of the
emergence and development of new sectors of the population in the society of the island
are considered. Based on the sources a thorough analysis of the image of the Vikings in
the public consciousness Irish is made.
