Stepan Smal-Stotsky’s journalistic, editorial and publishing activities

Annotation

The dissertation is a compherensive research of S. Smal-Stotsky’s press-
and book publishing activities. The scientifi c work deals with new fi ndings,
outlining research paradigms and formulating in-depth conclusions. The
works of famous Smal-Stotsky’s researchers and journalism-connoisseurs
have been examined, as well as having proposed a periodization of
S. Smal-Stotsky’s scientifi c work’s studies over 1888–2017s. There were
presented works about the activities of S. Smal-Stotsky in a chronological
order, highlighting priority areas of his engagement, interests – journalistic,
editorial and publishing activities.
For the fi rst time the dissertation analyzes the problem-topical aspects
of S. Smal-Stotsky’s journalistic works, formulating the main mastery prin-
ciples and showing the main reasons of engagement with stated activity.
At that time an importance of informing society and the effective ways of
persuasion – were the means of Ukrainian journalism functioning. These
aspects were successfully used by S. Smal-Stotsky while dealing with
repertoire of socio-political, popularized scientifi c and scientifi c range of
works’ problems.
More than 200 journalistic materials of S. Smal-Stotsky which have
been unfamiliar to scientifi c community before have been introduced
for the fi rst time, among which – in 116 publications the authorship of
S. Smal-Stotsky has been established. Besides, the work reveals ten (10)
cryptonyms and pseudonym, which have been used by S. Smal-Stotskiy
as a journalist.
The basic media fundament in managing issues, related to diverse ac-
tivities of S. Smal-Stotsky, were speech texts, in particular, the work deals
with 37 mentioned materials. It was elucidated that for him as a famous
public and political fi gure, the speech was used as a «calling card».
The main principles and approaches, which were followed by S. Smal-
Stotsky as an editor, are outlined and justifi ed. Thus, he has contributed
to а development of Ukrainian Bukovina’ print word of that time despite
frequent polygraphic losses, lack of experts in editorship and unfavourable
social and political conditions under the stateless conditions. This resulted
in a success – launching and functioning of a number of the Ukrainian press
publications in the Bukovina’s media market. The cause-effect relationship
of S. Smal-Stotsky editorial activities have been determinated, related to
content, shape, periodicity of journals, as well as their genre and topics.
He worked over informational and analytic-publicistic supply of press,
as well as organized the editorial staffs, cooperating with Y. Veselovsky,
T. Halip, І. Zaharko, S. Kravchuk, L. Lutsiv, О. Makovey, V. Simovich,
І. Sozonsky, V. Shchurat.
The history of Social communications was supplemented by book- and
newspaper-magazine production of S. Smal-Stotsky. There was elucidated
he was an initiator of creating such periodicals as: «Bukovina», «Ruska
shkola», «Ruska Rada», «Hliborob», «Ukraina» and others. Besides, such
projects as creating periodicals «Ukrainske viysko» and «Ruthenische
Echo» have not been implemented because of unfavourable political ob-
stacles, specifi cally a commencement of the First World War.
The editorial activity of S. Smal-Stotsky is represented in 54 book edi-
tions. His interests in liguistic issues («Pro plyan nauki ruskoi movy v gim-
naziah» (1901), «Pro rusku pravopys» (1891), in gramatic – in 4 editions
(1893; 1907; 1914; 1928), in literary issues («Harakterystyka literaturnoi
diyalnosti Ivana Franka» (1913), «T. Shevchenko. Inretpretatsii» (1934;
1965; 2003), in culturological («Bukovynska Rus» (1897), «Lvov, srdce
zäpadny Ukrajiny» (1919), in socio-political («V chim nasha sila» (1893),
«Moya politika» (1913), «Hromada, abo yakiy lad I poryadok maye buty
v hromadi» (1900), «Poradnyk, yak zakladaty kasy pozychkovi i shchad-
nychi (rayfayzenski)» (1900) questions have contributed in a demand for
and a creation of a new publishing product.
There was determined that S. Smal-Stotsky has successfully realized
the publication of Ukrainian classics’ works, specifi cally, the works of
V. Stefanyk, Y. Fedkovych, as well as he has cooperated as an editor with
Y. Zukrovsky, O. Kobylyanska, O. Popovich. It was mentioned that he
represented the visible progress of editorial activity not only in Bukovina,
but also projected its successful campaign in all the Western region of
Ukraine.
There was asserted an importance S. Smal-Stotsky’s book-publishing,
which contributed into an opportunity of the consolidation of the Ukrainian
community in Bukovina. Working in the political sphere, S. Smal-Stotsky
contributed to qualitative development of the Ukrainian journalism and
publishing activities at the end of ХІХ – in the 30s of ХХ century.
