The dissertation is the first comprehensive study of journalistic and editorial
activity of Petro Volyniak (pseudonym of Petro Kuzmovych Chechet (1907–1969)).
It is proved that the study of the information space of the Ukrainian diaspora is
an actual multidimensional problem that unites issues of ideological, cultural-
historical, linguistic character, demonstrating the specificity and regularities of the
emigration environment.
The early texts of P. Chechet / Petro Volyniak («In the Country of the Sun and
the Sands», «The Kuban – Ukrainian Land, the Cossack…», «Mikhailo Tantsura»)
have been analyzed, suggesting that the formation of Petro Volyniak as a journalist
took place on a writer’s ground.
The editorial and publishing projects of Petro Volyniak of the Austrian and
Canadian stages are presented. It was investigated that the architectonics of the
journal «New Days» (1950–1969) demonstrates the integrity of the editorial and
publishing idea on the content, structure and image levels. An open dialogue between
the editor and readers (the heading «Our correspondence», «Readers write») is
analyzed. In numerous polemical articles of Petro Volyniak, the urgent problem of
language-lysical and spelling norms of the language of periodical and book editions
of the Ukrainian diaspora is violated. It is proved that on the pages of the magazine
«New Days» all types of advertising are represented. Quantitative predominance of
commercial advertising. A significant role was played by social advertising targeting
Ukrainians who are facing complex integration processes in Canada. Political
advertising is the least. The advertising is dominated by the verbal component, the
role of photos and drawings is negligible. The template of the advertising slogan and
the general text, the reminder, the emotional factor, the use of such a marketing
move, as the preparation of the consumer to the appearance of the product on the
market – to such standards editor magazine.
It has been argued that «Sunflower» magazine for children (1956–1961) for
Petro Volyniak is a platform for the formation of a nationally conscious young
generation of Ukrainians, the cultivation of moral and ethical virtues, and promotion
of a healthy lifestyle.
On the material of publications in the journal «New Days», the information and
analytical genres of journalism of Petro Volyniak were investigated. It is revealed
that for informative genres of Petro Volyniak the regional character and approaching
interests of the Ukrainian-speaking audience are inherent. The ideological aspect,
realized through the analysis of social facts and phenomena, the review of the press,
historical excursions, elements of journalistic investigation and forecasting, plays a
significant role in the analytical publications of Petro Volyniak. The analytical texts
outline the nature of the links between the New Days and the Ukrainian diaspora
press. The literary-critical discourse of analytical journalism by Petro Volyniak is
singled out.
Key words: the history of Ukrainian emigre journalism, Petro Volynyak,
journalistic style, the history of the Ukrainian Diaspora Press, «New Days»,
