The Faculty of Philosophy has
a long history starting from 1661. It was then that Jesuits' collegium was
transformed into a University with two departments: Theology and Philosophy.
At that period there were about
200 students studying at the Faculty. The curriculum followed the ones of
the Jesuits' schools of the 16th century, and considerable changes were made
only in the 18th century. Aristotle's system, including Logic, Physics and
Metaphysics provided the basis of the curriculum. Besides these, History,
Geography, Greek and Latin were taught. The studies lasted for 3 years and
after graduation students could continue studying at the Faculty of
Theology.
In the middle of the 18th
century the Department of Mathematics was opened at the Faculty. Polish,
French, German, Geography and History started to be taught as separate
subjects.
After abolishing the Jesuits' Order in 1773 the University was closed down.
It was reopened in 1784 by the decree of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II.
It consisted of the Faculties of Law, Medicine and Theology and the Faculty
of Philosophy. Here philosophy played the role of preparatory courses to
three other "higher" faculties. During their first year students studied
Logic, "pure" Mathematics, General and Natural History and Diplomacy; during
the second year - Physics, Applied Mathematics and continued General
History; during the third year - Metaphysics, Natural Theology and Ethics,
General History, Numismatics, Aesthetics, Practical Mathematics, Geometry
and Technology.
The first Dean of the Faculty
of Philosophy of the reopened University became Ignacy Juzech Martynowicz
(1755-1795), the author of a two volume textbook on experimental Physics.
Among the professors of Philosophical subjects the following should be
mentioned: Petro Lodiy (1764-1829), a follower of the Cant Philosophy
and the author of textbooks "Metaphysics" and "Logical Instructions",
Ignac Jan Hanusch (1812-1869), professor of classical philology and
aesthetics Victor Vaclav Hann. During the 19th century there were 80
to 189 students at the Faculty of Philosophy each year. Such prominent
figures of Ukrainian culture and Politics as Ya.Holovatskiy,
I.Franko, M.Pavlyk, O.Terletskiy, V.Navrotskiy were
among them. In 1924 the Faculty of philosophy was divided into the Faculty
of Humanities and Scientific-Natural. The first half of the 20th century at
the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University was connected with the names of
the pupil of Brentano, representative of analytical philosophy Kazimierz
Twardowski (1866-1938), a pupil and critic of Edmund Husserl
phenomenologist Roman
Ingarden(1893-1970).
After World War II the Faculty of Philosophy was closed down, instead only
one Department of Philosophy was opened. In recent years it was headed by
professors A.S.Brahinets, B.T.Kublanov, T.Ya.Starchenko,
A.I.Pashuk. The teachers and professors of the department carried on
research in the branches of History of Philosophy, Methodology and Logic of
Scientific Cognition.
In 1992 the Faculty of Philosophy was reopened. It comprises the Departments
of Philosophy, Psychology, History and Theory of Culture, Political
Sciences. A Department of the History of Philosophy was created. The first
Dean of the renewed Faculty was Professor Andriy Pashuk. Now there 54
teachers and professors working at the Faculty, about 300 undergraduate and
postgraduate students study here. Certain courses are delivered by guest
lecturers, invited from Canada, the United States of America, Germany,
Austria, Poland.
