Vasyl’ Ivashkiv. European folklore and
literature motives in Panteleymon Kulish’ works of 1840-ies.
Apart from the constant attention to the theme of Ukraine, its past and present P. Kulish (1819-1897) often used the artistic experience of European literatures (in particular, W. Scott), and reinterpreted European themes and plots owing to his brilliant knowledge of cultures and languages of the majority of European nations. This gave M. Khvylyovyy the reason to call Kulish a real European, a person who could be considered a western intellectual.
The article studies special plot transformations of the sixth song of Homer’s “Odyssey” in the idyll “Orysya” and how the theme of antiquity has been interpreted in Kulish’s works. The Slavonic topic in the writer’s heritage can also be considered significant from the artistic point of view. Its peculiarities may be traced in the historical novels “Mykhaylo Charnyshenko, or Malorossiya eighty years ago” and “The Commoners’ Council” (“Chorna Rada”). On the basis of the former work one can mention the so called Serbian plot line.

The article is reflecting relations of P. Kulish with Ukrainian folklorists of 19th century (and with writers which recorded folklore). These relations were (some of them were written, some were indirect for example with M. Gogol’) very interesting, creative, unusual and important for development and working of P. Kulish as a folklorist.

Valeriya Pustovit. Genres of memoirs in Mykolà
Kostomarov’s works.
The article deals with M. Kostomarov's personality as an outstanding writer of memoirs of the 19th century. The attention is given to all genres of modern memoirs which are available in M. Kostomarov's heritage: autobiography, letters, obituary and the like.

In a given article the Kostomarov’s conception of Slavonic mythology is analyzed. This conception defines the ancient Slavonic world-view thinking within the framework of broad comparative context. It is pointed out that the “pagan” imagination was a form of universal spiritual experience, which was necessarily linked with a “basic mythos of culture”.

Panteleymon Kulish in Victor Petrov’s view.
V. Petrov’s scholarly work “Pantelymon Kulish in 50-ies. Life. Ideology. Works” is analyzed in the context of Kulish Studies works of the beginning of the 20th century. In the article there are systematized and criticized V. Petrov’s views on the history of appearance of P. Kulish’ “Zapiski o Yuzhnoy Rusi” as well as value of published in the volume folklore-ethnographic materials, and opportune issue of this work in 50-ies of the 19th century.

FROM THE HISTORY
OF FOLKLORE STUDIES
The article dwells upon the folkloristic thoughts of Waclaw from Oles’k, that were published in the preface to his collection of songs “Pieśni polskie i ruskie ludu Galicyjskiego” (Lviv, 1833). In the preface the author gave his opinion about the place of the folk studies among other human disciplines, specialties of folk songs characteristic features of Polish and Ukrainian folk poetry.

In the article is
examined the preconditions and context of Ukrainian “romantic folkloristics”.
The method is based on research of national archetypes and comparison of
general world context with narrows one (local).

The survey exposes Ukrainian researcher Olena Pchilka’s views on the topic problems of studying of Ukrainian folk dumas. Olena Pchilka was one of the first who showed importance of conservation and researching of ancient duma melodies. She was the only researcher who recognized “Duma about Kozak-bandurist” falsified.

The evolution of views on esthetic value of Ukrainian folklore during the period of development of Folklore Studies thought of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century is considered. There are researched ethnoesthetic peculiarities of national folklore symbols and poetics caused first of all with peculiarity of ethnic worldview of Ukrainians as well as complex of geographic and climatic conditions, and character of circumstances of historic life of the ethnos. Individual aspects of researching of the genesis of national criteria of beauty are outlined.

song repertoire of Plastuns, the members of the Plast Ukrainian scout

Ulyana Movna. Honey as erotic-sexual symbol of
Ukrainian wedding (folklore tradition).
The article investigates the role of honey as erotic-sexual symbol of Ukrainian wedding on the folklore materials and exposes the vital, erotic and magic fertile semantics of one as a universal symbol of sweet. The semantic sphere of wedding ritual includes active function of honey as important erotic-sexual symbol, which one was on a various stages of a wedding (betrothal, korovay ritual, “vinkopletiny”, preparation of marriage, greeting of bride and bridegroom by parents, bridal, komora ritual and “perezva”, “zavivannja” of bride). At the beginning stage of wedding folklore texts has erotic parallels, allegories, allusions, at the final stage ones, in perezva songs the ritual satiate of honey amounts to culmination.

“Poor Halya” trapped in the polyandry.
An attempt
has been made to create the invariance of the plot by structural analysis on
the material of the folklore ballads about the girl, seduced and destroyed by
some men. This plot is supposed to keep the ancient traditions of the
collective marriage, polyandry. The motif of the girl’s burning under the
pine-tree is considered as cleansing ritual while returning to the tribal
society.

Halyna Koval’. Agrarian semantics of Ukrainian
calender-rite songs.
The article focuses on the only one – agricultural – aspect of calendar-rite songs of Ukrainians. Attention is devoted to the whole agricultural cycle found in folklore. Semantics of agricultural process is revealed through metaphor, epithets, calendar symbols. The role and the place of the process in material and spiritual life of peasants are found out.

Mother’s memorates as the thematic variants of folklore stories.
The mothers
memorats – the tales of mothers about their own experience of waiting, bearing
and nursing of the child – must become the object of folklore research, so far
as these texts present modern forms of folklore creative work. According to its
genre peculiarities: spoken language, weak distinction from the flow of speech,
absence of the precise structure, deep-rootedness in the mythological type of
world outlook, domination of the informative function. We suppose mother's
memoraths to be a separate thematical kind of folklore stories.

The purpose of
this research is textual analysis of apocrypha topic “The Escape of Holy Family
to Egypt: the Help of Peasant and Miracle of Corn” which was depicted in folklore
(in carols and legends).
The topic of the escape of
Holy family to Egypt was not illustrated enough in Holy Scripture. In apocrypha
we sometimes can not find topics which are popular in folklore. For instance
“the miracle of corn” which was depicted in legends and carols is very popular
in Ukraine, Poland and Belarus. In national context Christian characters form
different connotation, they bear different cultural symbols and features. As an
example one can see a great many miraculous and unreal adventures of the trip
to Egypt which can be found in Christmas carols
