FROM THE HISTORY OF FOLKLORE STUDIES 

Iryna DOVHALIUK. To the history of Filaret Kolessa’s expedition to Naddniprians’ka Ukraine.

In the summer of 2008 it was one hundred years after Filaret Kolessa made the expedition to Myrhorod for recording kobzar and lyre player repertoire with phonographic rollers. The article deals with the history of preparing, realization and results of this considerable project made by Ukrainian intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century. The survey focuses on contribution of scholars who had active position in preserving traditional kobzar and lyre player repertoire for descendants, specifically Filaret Kolessa, Lesia Ukrainka, Klyment Kvitka and Opanas Slastion.

Iryna KOVAL’-FUCHYLO. "On side paths of kobzar epos" – historical dumas-songs, dumas-parodies, dumas of the 20th century.

Non-typical genres of Ukrainian duma epos such as historical dumas-songs, dumas-parodies, new dumas of the 20th century are analyzed. Appearance and functioning of these genres testify to considerable internal potential of duma tradition, specific rules of duma functioning. These rules enabled the origin of the other similar to duma genres as well as transformation of some formal elements of duma epos but they didn’t cause the decay of classic form of dumas.

Vasyl’ IVASHKIV. Panteleymon Kulish’s "Ukrainian Folk Legends": the question of its history".

The article explores peculiarities of Panteleymon Kulish’s (1819-1897) folkloristic activity in the 1840-ies, the result of which was a volume of folk prose "Ukrainian Folk Legends" published in 1847 and at the very time prohibited and confiscated (it was issued only in 1893). By using numerous archive materials and correspondence the author has managed to be more convincing in describing specific features of Kulish’s work as a folklorist as well as analyzing his editions of folk-poetic texts.

Olesia NAUMOVS’KA. Mykhaylo Drahomanov as the compiler and researcher of folk prose pieces.

The article focuses on little-known facts in scholarly biography of Mykhailo Drahomanov. Some peculiarities of scholar’s methodology are analyzed. Folklore psychological component separated by M. Drahomanov is accented.

THEORY AND METHODOLOGY 

Olena IVANOVS’KA. Functional-contextual school in folklore studies.

Scientific concepts of native and foreign scholars on the matter of usage of sociological, psychological, culture studying methods in researching folklore text are reviewed. Scholars’ reception of folklore studies subject field is represented as well. Vitality of using of integral scholarly approaches when enlisting functional-contextual, structural-semiotic scientific researching methods is argued.

Oleksandra BRITSYNA. Documenting and editing of folklore: Ukrainian scientific tradition and current trends of theory.

Literary-oriented model of folklore text was dominant in Ukrainian folklore studies for a long time. This was reflected by the folklore theory and also prevented to notice the difference between the oral folklore text and written literary one. Performanceoriented studies of folklore stress on the role of context and performers behavior in the process of textmaking. This is the possibility to change a lot of stereotypes in the folklore theory, field practice and edition.

Mykhaylo CHORNOPYSKYY. Phonomorphology and phonostylistics of Ukrainian folklore in Filaret Kolessa’s scientific works.

The article mainly focuses on evolution of reception of folklore as organic wordsound system of national worldview (Oleksandr Potebnia). Filaret Kolessa’s folklore researches in this field as well as Mykhailo Grushevskyy’s accent on its value for perception of historical development of folklore are considered.

Olena HINDA. Innovative format of traditional folk magic researches: review-and-bibliographic discourse.

The survey deals with one of variety of modern methodology such as integrative (interdisciplinary) approaches in studying of traditional folk magic culture. It is emphasized on effect of new interdisciplinary methodology/strategy that enables to include researching of individuality of tradition bearer, his/her psycho-mental characteristics into scientific context. These integrative studies contribute to more effectiveness in both researching of the phenomenon of traditional magic practice and bearers of this tradition. These methods will help to examine the folk traditional culture relics that are still saving their connection with the nature, the Universe and reflect archetypical conscience of our ancestors.

Roman KYRCHIV. Contextual background in reception, recording, publishing and researching of political anecdotes.

Peculiarities of existence of political anecdote are analyzed. It is accented on depending of its appearance, content, functionality on concrete historical facts such as persons, events, social and political phenomena that trouble society. Some peculiarities of fixation and publishing of the genre are also underlined, especially the need of documenting of information about genetic base of substance and idea of anecdote, its chrono-topical features, speech context of realization. Scholarly publications of political anecdote have to include the material that involves the memory mechanism.

Ol’ha YAKOVLIEVA. Analysis of folklore symbols: to the question of choosing methods.

The survey deals with the question of researching symbols in Ukrainian family rites. Modern stage of studying the problem expects 1) analysis of folklore texts from the position of new paradigm in linguistics and 2) reproduction of the united system of rite symbols. Rite is considered on the interdisciplinary level as the semiotic text in the aspect of reconstruction of social concepts that are preserved in language.

DOCUMENTING OF FOLKLORE 

Andriy VOVCHAK. On the way to creating of Ukrainian folklore archive.

Conceptual scientific achievements and intentions of Folklore Studies department at Ivan Franko National University in L’viv in the field of documenting folklore facts according to its main stages (fixation, transcription, archiving) are considered. Such modern tendencies of folklore archiving as complexity of fixating and deponing of folklore tradition, transition to electronic forms and formats of archive preservation and systematization of cultural information, creating possibilities for free access to archived folk cultural heritage in Internet are emphasized.

Lina DOBRIANS’KA. Musical-ethnographic archive of Problematic Scientific-Researching Laboratory of Musical Ethnology at Mykola Lysenko National Musical Academy in L’viv: past, present and future.

Musical Ethnology at Mykola Lysenko National Musical Academy in L’viv (PSRLME) has one of the biggest collection of music folklore records. Archive workers continue to improve methods of after-expedition recording and overworking of field materials. These methods were introduced by Volodymyr Hoshovs’kyy and
Bohdan Lukaniuk. Perspectives of PSRLME Archive are full transforming archive
founds into digital form and integration of the institution into the world community of folk music Internet-archives.
