INFLUENCE OF SELENIUM AND THE HEAVY METALS ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOSS FUNARIA HYGROMETRICA HEDW. O.Lobachevska, S.Majewska Institute of Ecology of the Carpatians Kozelnytska St. 4, UA-79026 Lviv, Ukraine e-mail:ecoinst@instecoc.cscd.lviv.ua Growth and development of the moss Funaria hygrometrica Hedw. have been studied as affected by selenium and the heavy metals (Cd, Pb). The moss patches turned out to be indifferent to the selenium at wide range of concentrations being, however, sensitive to the toxic action of the heavy metals. During the interaction of elements synergetic relation of selenium both to cadmium and to lead have been established. It is stressed that only the low selenium concentrations increase the antagonism between metals reducing the toxic effect of the elements on the processes of growth. Key words: protonema, chloronema, rhizoides, differentiation, heavy metals, selenium, interaction, antagonism, synergism.
