Influence of different concentrations of lead (10 & 1 mg per liter and 10 & 1 mkg per liter) on growth and ATPase activity in roots and shoots of maize seedlings (cv. Transcarpathian yellow-tooth shaped) were investigated. A high concentration of lead reduced growth, especially roots and lowered Ê+-Na+- ATPàse and Mg2+-ÀÒPàse activity. Pyrasoline (Ñ5Í4Î) treatment decreased harmful influence of lead.

Key words: growth, lead, pyrasoline, ATPase.
