Human platelets contain the nitric oxide synthase which catalyses the synthase NO from L-arginine. The effects of preincubation with L-arginine and inhibitors of NOS (NG-nitro-L-arginine and N-omega-methyl-L-arginine) were studied in platelets from healthy donors and IDDM patiens. Changes in NOS activity were also determined. The nitrite (NO2) + nitrate (NO3) levels were taken as an index of NO production and measured in plasma. The NO synthase inhibitors caused increasing the aggregation activity of platelets and decreasing of NO production.
