Ïðè ðîáîò³ ç òåêñòîì ïåðåêëàäà÷åâ³ íå ðàç äîâîäèòüñÿ çóñòð³÷àòèñÿ ç âèïàäêàìè, êîëè "ùîá â³ðíî ïåðåäàòè òîé ÷è ³íøèé îáðàç àáî ôðàçó â ïåðåêëàä³ ¿õ ïîòð³áíî ïîâí³ñòþ çì³íèòè" (Â.Ã.Áºë³íñüêèé). Ó ÷îìó æ ñóòü öèõ çì³í?

Ïåðø çà âñå, ñë³ä çàóâàæèòè, ùî âæèâàþ÷è òåðì³í êîíòåêñòóàëüíà çàì³íà, ìè ìàºìî íà óâàç³ âèêîðèñòàííÿ ó ïåðåêëàä³ ³íøîãî ñëîâà àáî ñëîâîñïîëó÷åííÿ (÷è îáðàçó) çàì³ñòü òîãî, ÿê³ â ìîâ³ ïåðåêëàäó ôîðìàëüíî â³äïîâ³äàþòü ñëîâó àáî ñëîâîñïîëó÷åííþ îðèã³íàëó. Òîìó êîëè â ìîâ³ ïåðåêëàäó íåìຠôîðìàëüíèõ â³äïîâ³äíèê³â îðèã³íàëüíîìó ñëîâó ÷è ñëîâîñïîëó÷åííþ, ãîâîðèòè ïðî çàì³íó áóëî á íåâ³ðíî. Äåùî ñïðîùóþ÷è ïèòàííÿ, ìîæíà ñêàçàòè, ùî êîíòåêñòóàëüíà çàì³íà ïåðåäáà÷ຠâ³äìîâó â³ä âèêîðèñòàííÿ ³ñíóþ÷èõ åêâ³âàëåíò³â àáî àíàëîã³â. 

×èì ìîæå áóòè âèêëèêàíà òàêà â³äìîâà? ²ç ñàìîãî òåðì³íà êîíòåêñòóàëüíà çàì³íà óæå çðîçóì³ëî, ùî ¿¿ ïðè÷èíîþ º îñîáëèâîñò³ êîíòåêñòó, òî÷í³øå íåçâè÷àéíå âæèâàííÿ ñëîâà àáî ñëîâîñïîëó÷åííÿ ó ïåâíîìó êîíòåêñò³. Ðîçãëÿíåìî òàêèé ïðèêëàä:

The ridiculous letters the Liberals sent to Mr. Churchill declaring that Tories must not use the word Liberal in describing their policies, for electoral reasons, are a bad joke.

 ßê ïåðåêëàñòè ó öüîìó êîíòåêñò³ ñëîâîñïîëó÷åííÿ a bad joke? Ó á³ëüøîñò³ âèïàäê³â öå áóäå ïîãàíèé æàðò. Àëå òóò, î÷åâèäíî, ³íøå çíà÷åííÿ: ÿêùî ë³áåðàëè ï³øëè íà òàêå ïðèíèæåííÿ, òî ¿ì íå äî æàðò³â. Ëîã³÷íî ïðîäîâæóþ÷è äóìêó, ïðèõîäèìî äî òàêîãî âàð³àíòó ïåðåêëàäó:

Çâè÷àéíî, âèùåñêàçàíå íå îçíà÷àº, ùî â óêðà¿íñüê³é ìîâ³ íåìຠñë³â, ÿê³ âèðàæàþòü øèðîê³ óçàãàëüíåííÿ. Íàâ³òü ïåðåðàõîâàíèì âèùå àíãë³éñüêèì ñëîâàì ìîæíà çíàéòè íàñò³ëüêè æ íåäèôåðåíö³éîâàí³ â³äïîâ³äíèêè: mind -³íòåëåêò, spirit - äóõ, feeling - â³ä÷óòòÿ, attitude - ðåàêö³ÿ íà ùîñü. Àëå ö³ â³äïîâ³äíèêè íå º åêâ³âàëåíòàìè, îñê³ëüêè íàâåäåí³ óêðà¿íñüê³ ñëîâà íå äàþòü ïîâíî¿ â³äïîâ³äíîñò³ àíãë³éñüêèì ñëîâàì í³ ó ñìèñëîâîìó, í³ â åêñïðåñèâíî-ñòèë³ñòè÷íîìó â³äíîøåíí³ ³ íàâðÿä ÷è âîíè áóäóòü äîðå÷íèìè ó ïåðåêëàä³ áóäü-ÿêîãî (íàïðèêëàä, ïîáóòîâîãî) òåêñòó.
