The Institute of Slavonic studies is founded in 1988 by informal combining of creative efforts of departments of history of South and Western Slavs (historical faculty) and Slavonic philology (philological faculty), and also some other departments of Ivan Franko National University in Lviv. Co-ordination of experimental work and implementation of general scientific projects in the sphere of Slavonic philology is the purpose of Institute. Besides the staff workers of the Institute in its realization on a voluntary basis take part above 30 researchers (among them are 7 doctors and 18 candidates of sciences). The scientists of several higher educational and scientific establishments of Lviv co-operate with the Institute. The Institute supports the contacts also with slavists of other cities of Ukraine (foremost from the universities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Uzhgorod, Chernivtsi, Drohobych) and foreign countries (from the universities in Warsaw, Lublin, high pedagogical school in Rzeszow (Poland), universities in Pryashiv and Ostrava (Czech), Byelorussian university and pedagogical college in Brest (Byelorussia), universities in Plovdiv and Velyko-Tyrnovo (Bulgaria) and others).
