On April 27, 2018, the opening and plenary session of International Scientific-Practical Conference «FOSS LVIV – 2018» was held in the Mirror Hall of Lviv Ivan Franko National University. This is already the 8th  conference at University in which developers and users of software, IT managers, and scientists interested in free software take part.

The event was organized by the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Lviv group of Linux users,  Drahomanov National Pedagogical University, Brest State Technical University and the project Linux Vacation / Eastern Europe.

The main task of the scientific meeting is to ensure effective communication and exchange of information between scientists and experts, discuss the prospects of developing free software in the business sector, science, and education, and promote new projects aimed at the dissemination of free software.

During the opening of the conference, Vitaliy Kukharskyy, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and Informatization of Lviv University, emphasized the relevance of the event. According to him, the use of free software is extremely important in modern Ukrainian realities, especially for the educational and scientific spheres.

“The issue of free software is relevant in many respects, in particular, in the educational environment. It is precisely the correct use of software that can enable our country to successfully deal with such negative phenomena as plagiarism and will generally contribute to optimizing and improving the university management system “, – said Vitaliy Kukharskyy, adding that the issue of free software use is relevant for the business environment of Lviv and Ukraine.

The representative of the National Pedagogical University named after  Dragomanov A. Vrozhbit addressed the participants of the conference and read out the greetings on behalf of the Head of the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Computer Science, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Myroslav Zhaldak.

Head of the Department of Radiophysics and Computer Technologies of  Ivan Franko Lviv University, Honored Professor of the University, Ivan Bolest, addressed the audience, stressing that the tradition of holding a conference is a vivid example of self-organization of a community engaged in free software. And so, Ivan Bolesta wished all the participants of a scientific meeting fruitful work and successful results.

Later, associate professor of the Department of Radiophysics and Computer Technologies of the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Technologies of the Lviv University, Grigory Zlobin, acquainted the participants with the program of this year’s conference in detail.

At the plenary meeting, academics and leading experts presented reports addressing the specifics and practices of using free software in various areas, from education to entrepreneurship.

The conference will last until April 28, 2018.
