Annotation

The thesis presents a sociological conceptualization of the phenomenon “social well-
being of internally displaced persons
” in the context of modern migration processes in
Ukraine. The definitions of the basic concepts that make up this conceptualization and its
theoretical propositions have been offered. The results of empirical research on the
characteristics of social well-being of IDPs from Donbas and Crimea in the territory of
modern Ukraine have been presented, and further directions of scientific examinations within
the outlined topic have been suggested.
The first chapter “Theoretical and methodological bases of studying the concept of
“social well-being”” reveals the peculiarities of the analysis and interpretation of social well-
being in the social sciences, as a result the author’s definition has been proposed; traditional
and modern methods of measuring social well–being in the context of transformational
changes of the present have been described and systematized, in particular the conceptual
scheme of analysis and the main factors of influence on social well-being of internally
displaced persons have been offered.
The second chapter “Internally displaced persons in modern Ukrainian society”
reveals the peculiarities of the analysis and interpretation of migration in the social sciences
and on this basis the problem of terminological nature between the following concepts of:
refugees, displaced persons or internally displaced persons has been examined; the author’s
definition of “IDPs” has been formulated; actual applied researches concerning the influence
of the current migration situation in the country on the social well-being of IDPs has been
analyzed; the validity of the applied methods has been found as well as the author’s
technologies for conducting empirical research on the selected problem have been proposed.
The third chapter “Applied aspects of research on the social well-being of internally
displaced persons in modern Ukrainian society” presents author’s results of applied
researches at both local and national levels.
The thesis outlines the results of the study of the characteristics of IDPs’ social health
in the context of contemporary migration processes in Ukraine. The research is based on the
author’s theoretical provisions on sociological theories, such as the theory of labeling (the
emphasis was placed on how society responds to various deviations and how it affects their
reproduction) and the deprivation approach (identifying indicators of deprivation and
clarifying how they testify to the level and quality of IDPs’ lives).

The results of the author’s researches allow us to draw the following conclusions at
both local and national levels. At the local level Lviv was selected in terms of accessibility of
the sample population and the following components have been established: a place of
residence and work before relocation, motives for moving to Lviv, employment and related
difficulties, assistance from the community and state authorities, the attitude of Lviv
population to IDPs from Donbas and Crimea in the territory of modern Ukraine. Thus, IDPs
are gradually adapting in Lviv, personal connections facilitated their employment and
development in the new place of residence. There is a high level of activity in carrying out
work activities and in conducting public life. The local population supports and treats IDPs
more positively than negatively.
At the national level the social well-being of IDPs from Donbas and Crimea in 2016
and 2019 is at an average level. Factors that affect the level of social well-being of IDPs are
sufficiently significant and similar in structure. In 2016 IDPs in the territory of modern
Ukraine a downward-rising model of social well-being was peculiar and in 2019 – a stable
one. As for the type of IDPs’ behaviour in the process of dealing with life situations, in 2016
it was temporary because people thought that the situation in the country would be solved
soon and they would return to their place of residence before relocation. In 2019 IDPs are on
the border between two types of behaviour, namely adapters and dependents. Some people
have resigned themselves to the fact that come-back to the territory before the relocation is
impossible. Therefore, they organize their own lives at a new place of residence. However,
another part of IDPs (dependents) believes that Ukrainian authorities are to blame for
everything, so it is obliged to provide them with all the necessary means of subsistence.
The findings and results obtained during the study have provided an opportunity to
verify the underlying hypotheses, and their complex generalization provides options for
making a number of proposals that have not only theoretical but also practical value.
The practical significance of the obtained results is that the theoretical propositions,
conclusions and recommendations developed by the author and proposed in the thesis can be
used for further theoretical and practical studies of the consequences of migration processes
in Ukrainian society; conducting comprehensive studies of the manifestation of social well-
being of different groups of adults; development and teaching of disciplines: “Sociology of
Migration”, “Methodology of Sociological Studies of Social Phenomena”, as well as
preparation of textbooks in these subjects; development of state and public social projects
and programs, effective public policy, whose main task is to improve the quality of life of
the population.
Key words: well-being, social well-being IDPs, migration processes, migration, IDPs.
